Virata Parva

The twelve years of forest exile are complete, but one final and dangerous condition remains. The Pandavas must spend a full year without being recognized. If discovered before the term ends, the entire exile must begin again.

They discuss possible kingdoms and finally choose Matsya, ruled by King Virata. The kingdom is prosperous and politically suitable for concealment.

Each Pandava must adopt a believable role. Their greatest challenge is not battle but restraint: men famous across the world must suppress their identity, pride and natural habits.

Draupadi too must enter service under another name, and the family agrees to avoid unnecessary public contact.

The incognito year becomes a test of discipline after years of open hardship in the forest.

The Pandavas cannot enter Virata's city carrying weapons that would immediately expose them. Arjuna's Gandiva alone is too famous to remain unnoticed.

They select a large Shami tree near a cremation ground and hide their bows, swords and other weapons high in its branches.

The unpleasant location helps keep ordinary people away.

Leaving the weapons behind is psychologically significant: their strength is still theirs, but for a year they must live as though it is unavailable.

The Shami tree becomes a symbol of concealed power waiting for the proper hour.

Yudhishthira enters as Kanka, a learned companion skilled in dice and royal conversation.

Bhima becomes Ballava, a cook with knowledge of wrestling.

Arjuna becomes Brihannala, teaching music and dance in the women's quarters, especially to Princess Uttara.

Nakula tends the royal horses and Sahadeva manages cattle.

Draupadi becomes Sairandhri in Queen Sudeshna's service.

Each disguise uses a real skill while carefully hiding royal identity.

Kichaka, Virata's powerful commander and Sudeshna's brother, becomes obsessed with Sairandhri.

Draupadi repeatedly rejects him and warns that she is protected by powerful husbands whom she describes as Gandharvas.

Kichaka ignores her refusal and uses his influence to pressure her.

Draupadi is publicly humiliated while the Pandavas must restrain themselves to protect the incognito year.

Bhima finds it almost unbearable to watch her suffer after the Kuru court.

The Pandavas need a solution that punishes Kichaka without exposing their identities.

Draupadi secretly tells Bhima about the danger. They devise a plan that can punish Kichaka without openly revealing the Pandavas.

Draupadi invites Kichaka to a secluded hall at night.

Kichaka arrives expecting Draupadi, but Bhima waits in the darkness.

A fierce hand-to-hand struggle follows.

Bhima kills Kichaka and leaves his body so crushed that the court believes Sairandhri's mysterious Gandharva protectors destroyed him.

Draupadi is saved, but the death of Matsya's commander makes the kingdom appear vulnerable.

After Kichaka's death, Trigarta king Susharma sees Matsya as vulnerable and raids its cattle.

Virata marches out with his forces, accompanied by Yudhishthira, Bhima, Nakula and Sahadeva in disguise.

The battle turns dangerous and Virata is captured.

Yudhishthira quietly directs Bhima to rescue him without revealing too much.

Bhima defeats the enemy force and frees Virata.

The king still does not realize that the servants saving his kingdom are the Pandavas.

While Virata's main army is away, the Kauravas strike from another direction and seize Matsya's cattle.

Their force includes Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna, Duryodhana and other great warriors.

Young Prince Uttara boasts that he can recover the cattle if he has a capable charioteer.

The women of the palace recommend Brihannala.

Uttara accepts Brihannala as charioteer and rides out expecting glory.

He has no idea that the person holding the reins is Arjuna.

As Uttara approaches the Kuru army, his boasting disappears before the sight of veteran warriors.

He panics and tries to flee.

Brihannala stops him and warns that flight after public boasting will destroy his honor.

Arjuna proposes that Uttara become the charioteer while Brihannala fights.

The prince agrees.

They turn toward the Shami tree where the Pandavas' weapons have waited through the year.

At the Shami tree, Arjuna asks Uttara to retrieve the hidden weapons.

Uttara is astonished by their size and splendor.

Arjuna reveals that he is Arjuna and explains the disguises of his brothers and Draupadi.

To remove all doubt, he recounts his famous names and deeds.

He then takes up the Gandiva again after a year of concealment.

Brihannala disappears, and the warrior feared by the Kuru army returns.

With Uttara driving, Arjuna advances toward the Kuru army.

The elders recognize the Gandiva's sound and Arjuna's style.

The Kauravas debate whether the incognito year has truly ended.

Arjuna fights to recover the cattle rather than pursue needless slaughter.

He counters Bhishma, Drona, Kripa, Karna and others with the celestial skill gained in exile.

A powerful weapon incapacitates many warriors and allows the cattle to be recovered.

The battle announces that the Pandavas' military power has fully returned.

Once the incognito period is safely complete, the Pandavas abandon their disguises.

They enter Virata's assembly in royal dress and take places appropriate to kings.

Virata is initially confused.

The truth is revealed: Kanka is Yudhishthira, Ballava is Bhima, Brihannala is Arjuna, and the remaining servants are Nakula, Sahadeva and Draupadi.

Virata realizes that the people who served in his court also saved his kingdom.

Matsya now becomes a natural ally of the restored Pandavas.

Virata, grateful to Arjuna, proposes Princess Uttara as a bride for him.

Arjuna refuses because he has taught Uttara as a student and regards her like a daughter.

He proposes that Uttara marry his son Abhimanyu instead.

The marriage links Matsya with the Pandavas and, through Subhadra, with Krishna's Yadava family.

The celebration is also a political alliance after thirteen years of exile.

Virata Parva ends with restored identity, alliance and preparation for Udyoga Parva.
