The Forest Journey – Panchavati, Surpanakha, the Golden Deer and Sita's Abduction
Aranya Kanda, the third book of the Valmiki Ramayana, takes Rama, Sita and Lakshmana deep into Dandaka forest. Their encounters with Viradha, sages and Agastya lead them to Panchavati. There, Surpanakha's humiliation leads to Khara and Dushana's destruction, Ravana conspires with Maricha, the golden deer draws Rama away, Sita is abducted, and Jatayu gives his life resisting Ravana. The search then passes through Kabandha and Shabari to Pampa, preparing the way for Sugriva and Hanuman.

Aranya Kanda
Rama, Sita and Lakshmana enter the deeper Dandaka forest, where hermitages and danger exist side by side.
Viradha attacks and seizes Sita, but Rama and Lakshmana defeat him and learn the story of his cursed condition.
The episode establishes the forest as a moral landscape of violence, penance, curse and release.
Aranya Kanda
Rama visits the hermitages of Sharabhanga and Sutikshna, while forest ascetics seek protection from rakshasa violence.
Sita questions unnecessary conflict; Rama explains his duty toward those who have sought his protection.
At Agastya's hermitage, Rama receives weapons and guidance to Panchavati.

On the way to Panchavati, the brothers meet Jatayu, an aged friend of Dasharatha who promises to watch over Sita.
Lakshmana builds a dwelling near the Godavari, and for a time their forest life becomes peaceful and ordered.
Jatayu's presence quietly prepares for the loyalty he will later prove with his life.
Aranya Kanda
Surpanakha approaches Rama at Panchavati; the encounter turns hostile when Sita is threatened and Lakshmana punishes her.
Surpanakha appeals to Khara, leading to escalating attacks from Janasthana.
Rama destroys the force and kills Dushana, Trishira and Khara, bringing his conflict with the rakshasa power to Ravana's attention.
Aranya Kanda
Ravana decides to attack Rama through Sita and seeks Maricha's help.
Maricha warns repeatedly that Rama is extraordinarily dangerous, but Ravana forces him to cooperate.
Maricha takes the form of a dazzling golden deer to lure Rama away from Panchavati.
Aranya Kanda
Sita is captivated by the golden deer and asks Rama to obtain it. Rama follows it and eventually kills Maricha.
Dying, Maricha imitates Rama's voice and cries out for Sita and Lakshmana, causing Lakshmana to leave the hermitage.
Ravana then approaches in disguise, reveals his intent, rejects Sita's resistance and carries her away toward Lanka.
Aranya Kanda
Jatayu sees Ravana carrying Sita away and challenges him despite his age.
He fights fiercely to stop the abduction, but Ravana wounds him and continues toward Lanka.
Jatayu survives long enough to tell Rama that Ravana took Sita, then dies and receives Rama's grief and funeral honors.
Aranya Kanda
Rama and Lakshmana encounter Kabandha, whose enormous arms seize them.
They cut off his arms and release him from his cursed form.
Kabandha advises Rama to seek Sugriva, turning the search from grief-stricken wandering into a strategic quest for allies.
Aranya Kanda
Rama and Lakshmana reach Shabari's hermitage, where the devoted ascetic has long awaited Rama's arrival.
She receives them with reverence and completes her spiritual journey.
The brothers then proceed to Pampa Lake, where Aranya Kanda ends and the path toward Sugriva, Hanuman and Kishkindha begins.
