Shalya Parva
Shalya Takes Command – The Eighteenth Day
After Karna's death, the Kaurava cause is close to collapse. Kripa advises Duryodhana to consider peace, but Duryodhana resolves to continue the war and appoints Shalya, king of Madra, as commander.
Shalya accepts command of the surviving Kaurava forces on the eighteenth day. The army is only a remnant of the immense host that entered Kurukshetra, yet its warriors still fight with desperate intensity.
The Pandavas understand that the war is approaching its military conclusion. Every surviving commander now carries unusual importance because there are few reserves left behind them.
The final day therefore begins with both sides exhausted, bereaved and determined to settle a conflict that has consumed nearly every great warrior of their generation.
